Our friend Phil Fraser wrote an intriguing article that appears in iGaming Business magazine this month. He speculates that online bingo has sped past the "next big thing" moniker, through its ugly duckling phase and is now "all grown up." While that's certainly true in the UK, it's not necessarily so in the rest of Europe and other parts of the world. There are big things ahead for online bingo when we start thinking globally.
According to figures released by Global Betting and Gaming Consultants (GBGC), online bingo games generated wins of £72 million in the past year. By 2013, analysts expect online bingo wins to reach £164 million. GBGC also estimates that the global gross gaming yield of bingo (excluding the US) was $0.5 billion USD in 2006. They forecast it will grow to be worth around $1.0 billion USD by 2010.
Online bingo can't stay out of the headlines these days. Recently, 888 Holdings made news with the purchase of bingo operator Globalcom for a massive $32.4 million. Why all the fuss? It's because casino, sportsbook and poker operators are beginning to see that bingo means big business.
According to WhichBingo.com, the average lifetime value of an online bingo player is estimated to be £391. The site conducted a survey that found a typical player deposits between £30 to £70 each month, and spends between five to 18 months at one site before moving on.
A recent report by Global Betting and Gaming Consultants estimates that the Gross Yield of all Online Bingo operations will surpass $710 million USD in 2006. The group also predicts that gross online bingo yield will rise to $1.04 billion USD by 2008.
Nearly 3 million people played bingo on Parlay-powered websites in 2005. The number is a significant 53% increase over 2004. New player sign-ups on sites using Parlay software jumped by 91% to more than 1.6 million in 2005. It is estimated that Parlay-powered bingo sites account for more than 40% of the online bingo market, significantly more than any other software provider.
Over 50% of an online bingo site's wagering is generated from slots, which can offer significant prizes. In November 2005, online bingo player Dcperkin1966 won a whopping $103,100 US with a single pull of the Trolling for Treasure slot machine at Bingos.com. It is believed that the payout is the largest single prize ever awarded to-date in an online bingo hall.
According to stats gathered by Phil Fraser, founder of WhichBingo.com, online bingo players are getting younger. Fraser's figures show that nearly 25% of online players are under 35 and the size of the under-35 segment grows each year.
